These words were a constant companion twelve years ago and now in later months.  One of my favourites.

O Love that wilt not let me go
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths it's flow
May richer, fuller be

O light that foll'west all my way
I yield my flick'ring torch to thee;
My heart restores it's borrowed ray
That in thy sunshine's blaze it's day
May fairer, brighter, be

O joy, that seekest me through pain
I cannot close my heart to thee
I trace the rainbow through the rain
And feel the promise is not vain
That morn shall tearless, be

O cross that liftest up my head
I dare not ask to fly from thee
I lay in dust life's glory dead
And from the ground, there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be

George Matheson

This was brought to me a couple of times lately.  Today a line is playing over in my head ...

When God wants to drill a man,
And thrill a man,
And skill a man
When God wants to mold a man
To play the noblest part;

When He yearns with all His heart
To create so great and bold a man
That all the world shall be amazed,
Watch His methods, watch His ways!

How He ruthlessly perfects
Whom He royally elects!
How He hammers him and hurts him,
And with mighty blows converts him

Into trial shapes of clay which
Only God understands;
While his tortured heart is crying
And he lifts beseeching hands!

How He bends but never breaks
When his good He undertakes;
How He uses whom He chooses,
And which every purpose fuses him;
By every act induces him
To try His splendor out-
God knows what He’s about.
